On April 23, 2021, charge d’affaires Mr. Aziz Omar met with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Sub-Regional Coordinator for Central Asia, Chief of Mission in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Turkmenistan.
At the beginning, Mr. Zeynal Hajiyev, spoke about activities of IOM and about migration situation in Central Asia and Almaty process on refugee protection.
The Almaty Process promotes sustained dialogue and exchange of information on migration issues and on refugee protection challenges in Central Asia and the wider region.
The meeting continued with a discussion about the ongoing Afghanistan peace talks and long-term peace building efforts. Mr.Omar emphasized the importance of the Afghan-Taliban peace talks not only for Afghanistan, also for whole Central Asia.
The two sides discussed future joint activities and potential bilateral cooperation with IOM and UNHCR as well.
The flow of labor migrants in Kazakhstan is around 2 million per year and migrants who use Kazakhstan road to Russia is around 5 million.
The Embassy of Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and regional office of IOM in Nur-sultan agreed for future cooperation about developing afghan migration issues.
